Where can I find my NMI?

Your NMI will typically be found on the second page of your electricity bill for most retailers.

What is a NMI?

Your NMI is your National Meter Identifier. This is the number of the meter connection point that is used to report your electricity consumption to the energy market operator and your retailer.

An NMI will be a 10 digit number which may also have an additional 11th check digit.
The letter characters “O” and “I” are not used in NMIs to avoid confusion with 0 (zero) and 1 (one).

An NMI is allocated by your local network service provider at the time of installation of the meter and remains in place until the metering connection point is removed, regardless of customer changes at the premises. When you enter a new contract with a retailer, the NMI is used to identify the connection point and transfer the responsibility for the billing of energy charges to the retailer.

Where is my NMI?

Some buildings and meters may have the NMI listed on or near the meter equipment itself but the location of the number may be difficult to find and may be confused with other meter numbers or meters of other tenants.

You can also call your retailer to find out the NMI if you don’t have a bill handy but you may need to quote your account number or other identification details before the retailer will provide NMI information.

Examples of where to find a NMI on page 2 of an electricity bill are highlighted in red rectangles in the below bill examples from 2 different retailers. The location will vary by retailer and will change when retailers redesign their billing format. Generally, the NMI will be located close to where the details of the charges are outlined and often near the supply address.

Which electricity network am I in?

If you already have a NMI and need to find out which network service provider or electricity network you are with, the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) has a published a list of NMI ranges and their allocated network providers on their website. As a guide, the below outlines NMI prefixes and their corresponding provider. Please note: names and ownership of networks are subject to change.
